Golf Intelligence & PlayerPath: Framework Overview

The diagnostic framework connecting Tiger 5 failure tracking to PlayerPath performance drivers across Driving, Approach, Short Game, and Putting — how the pieces fit together and how to use them.

Overview

College programs have access to more golf data than ever before. GPS trackers, shot-tracking apps, statistical platforms, launch monitors: the options for collecting and processing shot-level data have never been more plentiful. The raw data is not the problem. The problem is that most analytics pipelines stop at description. They tell you what happened. They do not tell you why, and they do not tell you what to do about it.

Theory Golf's PlayerPath framework is built on a different premise: the job of analytics is to identify the fewest, highest-leverage questions a coach needs to answer about a player's game. Five failure types. Causal hierarchies. Empirically-grounded thresholds. Targeted practice prescriptions.

Golf Intelligence. The systematic identification of the specific, measurable factors that explain a player's scoring outcomes, not what happened at the surface level, but why it happened at the root level. Golf Intelligence is the data layer that powers PlayerPath analysis: it supplies the shot-level evidence that confirms, challenges, or refines a performance driver designation.

Architecture: Three Layers, One System

Golf Intelligence does not operate independently. It is the data layer that feeds PlayerPath, the Theory Golf framework for identifying a player's primary performance driver and building development priorities around it. Understanding how the layers relate is what separates coaches who use data to confirm hunches from those who use data to find things they couldn't have seen otherwise.

Why More Stats Create Less Clarity

A typical strokes gained breakdown gives a coach 8 to 12 categories to interpret simultaneously. When a player shoots 74, which category is responsible? Driving? Approach from 125 to 150 yards? Scrambling percentage from the rough? Short putts made? Without a diagnostic hierarchy, each stat becomes noise.

Causal Hierarchy First. PlayerPath ranks the four game segments by their causal contribution to scoring. Driving creates position. Approach converts position into proximity. Putting converts proximity into strokes. Short game prevents compounding damage. Each segment's analytical output informs the next.

A player who three-putts twice per round has a scoring deficiency. The question is whether it is an approach problem, a lag distance control problem, or a short putt conversion problem. That answer changes the practice prescription entirely. Three different root causes. Three different paths forward. Same scoreline.

Empirical Thresholds, Not Theoretical Ones. Every cutoff in the PlayerPath framework is derived from the elite college (+3 handicap) benchmark table: the expected strokes remaining from every distance and lie type at competitive amateur level. A threshold only appears in the framework if the analytical margin is wide enough to carry coaching weight.

Where another system might set a threshold because it sounds right, PlayerPath sets thresholds where the underlying data shows a meaningful, coaching-relevant difference in expected outcome. The analytical margin has to be wide enough to matter in a real conversation about a real player.

Diagnosis Drives Prescription. Every PlayerPath performance driver maps directly to a Tiger 5 failure type: D1–D5 (Driving), A1–A5 (Approach), SG1–SG3 (Short Game), P1–P4 (Putting). The dashboard doesn't surface drivers in isolation. It surfaces them as answers to the question: which Tiger 5 failures are occurring, and what is the root cause? The path from data to practice session is explicit.

Tiger 5: Five Failure Types, Every Round Explained

Tiger 5 identifies the five scoring outcomes that account for the majority of strokes dropped in any competitive round. A player who understands which of these is showing up most often knows exactly where their game is leaking.

T1. Par-5 Bogeys

Making bogey on a par 5. Par 5s are the holes where elite college players are expected to make birdie or at worst par. A bogey here doesn't just cost a stroke, it costs the scoring opportunity the hole was designed to provide. A high par-5 bogey rate is one of the clearest signs that a player is not converting position into score.

Segments: Driving, Approach, Putting

T2. Doubles & Worse

A double bogey or worse on any hole. Doubles are the single highest-cost scoring event in a round and almost always involve compounding failures: a penalty, a poor recovery, a three-putt, or some combination. A player averaging more than one double per round is giving back more strokes than any other part of their game can recover.

T3. Three-Putts

Taking three or more putts to finish a hole. Each three-putt erases whatever the approach shot created. A player tracking three-putts knows whether the issue is distance control on long putts, conversion on short ones, or a proximity problem that starts with the approach.

T4. Bogeys from 125 Yards or Less

Making bogey when the approach shot was played from inside 125 yards. This is where elite college players are expected to convert at a high rate. A bogey from this range means the player had a scoring opportunity in hand and could not deliver. One of the clearest signals of a short game or wedge skill gap.

T5. Missed Easy Up & Downs

Missing a green and then failing to get up and down from a position that should be converted. When a player misses a green, the short game is the safety net. A failed up and down turns a manageable miss into a bogey or worse. Tracking this separately isolates the short game as its own scoring category with its own improvement path.

How to Interpret What You See

Tiger 5 failures are the signal. Reading them correctly is what converts data into a coaching decision. There are four layers to the interpretation.

  1. Count, then compare to benchmark. The raw number of Tiger 5 failures per round matters only relative to a competitive standard. A player averaging 3 to 4 Tiger 5 failures per round in college competition is performing near the Tiger threshold. A player averaging 6 or more is experiencing systemic breakdown that no segment-level fix will address without first understanding the pattern. The benchmarks in Golf Intelligence reflect competitive performance targets, not personal bests.
  2. Look for category concentration. Random Tiger 5 failures distributed evenly across all five categories are less diagnostically meaningful than failures clustered in one or two. Three par-5 bogeys and four three-putts in the same round is a different picture than one of each. Concentration is the signal to act on. It points to a specific, addressable root cause rather than general variance.
  3. Track trend across rounds, not just the most recent. A single round with five Tiger 5 failures can be variance. The same category appearing in four of the last five competitive rounds is a pattern. Golf Intelligence surfaces both, the single-round view and the rolling window, so coaches and players can distinguish variance from structure. A pattern is what triggers a PlayerPath driver review.
  4. Use category as navigation, not conclusion. Tiger 5 identifies where scoring damage occurred. It does not explain why. A three-putt is not a diagnosis, it is a direction. It sends you to the Putting segment, where first-putt distance data and make rates together determine whether the failure is a lag problem, a short putt problem, or an approach problem that left the ball too far to manage. Every Tiger 5 category is a question, not an answer.

Then navigate together to the relevant segment tab. This keeps the conversation focused on what actually cost strokes, not what the player remembers most vividly.

From Failure to Fix: How Golf Intelligence Connects Tiger 5 to PlayerPath

Tiger 5 identifies what failed in a round. Golf Intelligence then answers the harder question: why did it fail, and in which part of the game?

Take three-putts. A player who three-putts twice per round has a T3 deficiency, but the cause is rarely the same for any two players. Is it a proximity problem on approach, leaving the ball too far from the hole to manage two putts? Is it a lag skill gap, failing to get a long putt within tap-in range? Or is it a short-putt conversion issue, missing putts inside six feet? Each of these calls for a different practice prescription. Golf Intelligence resolves this at the hole level, automatically, using strokes gained impact to identify which part of the game drove the failure.

PlayerPath then aggregates that data across all rounds. By combining frequency of failure with strokes gained magnitude, it surfaces the game segment where improvement will have the greatest scoring impact. A player's PlayerPath profile is not a list of everything that needs work, it is a ranked priority order, grounded in the data, showing where to focus first.

PlayerPath Codes: Complete Reference

Each PlayerPath code identifies a specific, measurable performance driver within its game segment. Once Golf Intelligence surfaces the root cause segment, the relevant drivers below show exactly where the strokes are being lost and what needs to improve. A player's code profile is their development fingerprint.

Driving

D1. Tee Shot Penalty Rate. Rate of tee shots resulting in a penalty stroke: out of bounds, water hazard, or unplayable lie. The single highest-cost failure in the driving segment. Each penalty costs a minimum of one stroke above expectation before any recovery is required, and frequently triggers downstream damage that compounds into a double bogey.

D2. Distance Deficiency. Driving distance relative to the +3 college benchmark, measured by the approach distance generated from tee shots. A distance deficiency forces longer approach shots from less favorable clubs, reducing approach accuracy and SG opportunity at the segment level that follows. Particularly common as a contributor to par-5 underperformance.

D3. Recovery Rate. Success rate on recovery attempts from off-fairway positions: rough, trees, or compromised lies where the primary objective is returning to a playable position. A low recovery rate indicates the player is compounding tee shot errors rather than limiting damage.

D4. Rough Penalty on Long 2nd Shots. Additional strokes lost on long second shots played from rough lies. Quantifies the scoring cost of driving inaccuracy on holes where approach position matters most: par 4s and par 5s requiring full-swing second shots.

D5. Sand Rate (Scoring Zone). Rate of tee shots finding fairway bunkers on scoring zone holes, paired with the resulting approach difficulty. On holes where position creates birdie opportunity, fairway bunker contact shifts the approach from a scoring shot to a defensive one.

Tiger 5: T1 Par-5 Bogeys, T2 Doubles & Worse

All five driving drivers share the same Tiger 5 attribution rule: whichever tee shot records the lowest SG value on a Par-5 Bogey or Double Bogey fail hole is the attributed root cause, regardless of which specific driver it reflects.

Approach

A1. Long Approach GIR. Green in regulation rate from long approach distances (150 to 200 yards), beyond the short scoring zone. Captures whether the player keeps the hole manageable on longer par 4s and par 5s where a full-swing second shot is required.

Tiger 5: T1 Par-5 Bogeys, T2 Doubles & Worse

A2. Short Approach Scoring Position. Quality of scoring position created from approach shots inside 150 yards: finding the green inside 20 feet, or missing the green within 6 yards of the pin. Approach shots left beyond 40 feet on the green are flagged as a contributing factor to three-putts, making A2 the clearest early-warning signal for elevated three-putt counts.

A3. Approach Precision Rate. Rate at which approach shots across the full 50 to 200 yard range land within 20% of starting distance (in feet) from the pin. Evaluates execution precision independent of lie type, capturing whether the player converts opportunities into real scoring position rather than just average proximity.

Tiger 5: T1 Par-5 Bogeys, T2 Doubles & Worse, T4 Bogeys from 125 or Less

A4. Approach Penalty Rate. Penalty strokes occurring on approach shots: water hazards, OB, unplayable lies from approach distances. Tracks decision quality in hazard-adjacent approach scenarios and club selection patterns under pressure.

Tiger 5: T2 Doubles & Worse (primary); also T1 Par-5 Bogeys, T4 Bogeys from 125 or Less

A5. Approach Obstruction Rate. Rate at which approach shots end in a recovery lie or more than 25% of starting distance from the pin, without a penalty stroke. Identifies non-penalty misses severe enough to functionally destroy a hole.

Tiger 5: T1 Par-5 Bogeys, T2 Doubles & Worse (both primary); also T4 Bogeys from 125 or Less

Short Game

SG1. Frequency & Routing Signal. Volume of short game shots per round and the share that follow a missed green in regulation from approach range. This is a diagnostic signal, not an execution driver: high volume traceable to missed greens points the practice priority upstream to Approach or Driving rather than Short Game itself.

Tiger 5: not itself attributed; a leading indicator for whether elevated T1, T2, or T4 counts trace back to Approach rather than Short Game

SG2. Second Attempt Conversion Rate. On holes where a player already needed two short game shots, the rate at which the second attempt converts in one stroke or fewer. The compounding test: does trouble get stopped, or does it get worse.

SG3. Fairway Precision Rate. Rate at which short game shots from a clean fairway lie inside 25 yards finish within 5 feet of the hole. The no-excuse shot: no bunker technique, no heavy rough, no compromised stance.

Putting

P1. Short Make Rate (5–10 ft). Make percentage on putts from 5 to 10 feet, benchmarked against the +3 college baseline. At 10 feet, the +3 benchmark expects approximately 1.62 putts; make rates significantly below this threshold indicate a high-priority short putt improvement target. The most costly per-stroke putting failure in competitive golf.

Tiger 5: T3 Three-Putts

P2. Mid Make Rate (10–15 ft). Make percentage on putts from 10 to 15 feet, the upper boundary of the high-make-priority zone. The 15-foot threshold is derived from the +3 benchmark (1.79 expected putts): above 15 feet, the expected make rate drops below the level where make percentage is the primary coaching target.

P3. Speed Window: Lag. Distance control quality on putts from 15 to 40 feet. The Speed Window metric evaluates whether the player achieves a 50/50 short/long distribution, the target dispersion pattern that minimizes three-putt exposure. The +3 benchmark expects roughly 1.88 putts from 20 feet and 2.07 from 40 feet.

P4. Speed Window: Long Lag. Three-putt rate and distance control from 40 or more feet, the T3 threshold zone. At 40 feet, expected putts exceed 2.07 for the +3 baseline, meaning any three-putt from this range represents a statistically attributable distance control failure.

How to Use It: The Five-Step Post-Round Process

Golf Intelligence is designed to be used in a specific sequence. Following it takes 10 to 15 minutes after a competitive round and produces a clear, actionable finding every time. The sequence matters: skipping steps or reversing the order is the most common way to draw the wrong conclusion from good data.

  1. Land on Tiger 5. Open Golf Intelligence after the round and read the Tiger 5 view. Count total failures. Identify which category or categories drove the most damage. Do not navigate anywhere else yet. The only question at this step is: where did the scoring damage actually come from?
  2. Identify the lead category. Which Tiger 5 category had the most failures, or the highest concentration? This is the diagnostic starting point, not the most emotionally vivid moment of the round, not the shot that felt worst, but the category that appeared most consistently. Pattern beats memory. Trust the count.
  3. Navigate to the relevant segment. Each Tiger 5 category maps to one or more game segments. Navigate to that segment and read the root cause data. For three-putts, check first-putt distance before concluding anything about putting skill. For doubles, check Driving before Short Game. For par-5 bogeys, check Approach on par 5s before assuming the issue is par-5 specific. Follow the causal chain upstream.
  4. Confirm or redirect. The segment data will either confirm the surface diagnosis or redirect you to a different part of the game. A three-putt problem with 30-foot average first putts is an approach problem in disguise: redirect to approach. A three-putt problem with 20-foot average first putts and poor make rates is a genuine putting driver: confirmed. This step prevents the most common error in player development: treating symptoms as root causes.
  5. Track rounds, escalate to PlayerPath. A finding from one round is a data point. The same finding across three to four competitive rounds is a pattern, and a pattern is the threshold for PlayerPath driver designation. When Golf Intelligence surfaces a consistent Tiger 5 category, that is the trigger: open a full PlayerPath review, confirm the performance driver, and build practice around the confirmed root cause until the data shows meaningful change.

Three Principles

I. The Why Is Upstream. The most visible failures in a round are almost never the root cause. Three-putts are visible. Missed up-and-downs are visible. Short-iron bogeys feel inexcusable. But the data consistently shows that failures at the end of the hole are frequently caused by earlier-chain breakdowns. The first instinct to fix what you remember most is usually wrong. Golf Intelligence is designed to interrupt that instinct and trace every failure back to its earliest causal point. Always follow the chain upstream before accepting a surface-level explanation.

II. Frequency Determines Priority. A performance gap only becomes a driver when it occurs frequently enough to materially impact scoring. A player who misses every fairway bunker shot may have a significant technical weakness, but if they encounter one fairway bunker per tournament, fixing it won't change their scoring average. Golf Intelligence only elevates patterns at a volume where closing the gap would produce a meaningful scoring outcome. Low-frequency weaknesses are noted; they do not become development priorities until their volume warrants it.

III. Context Is Not Optional. No statistic in Golf Intelligence is interpreted in isolation. Putting SG without first-putt distance context is incomplete. Short game SG without lie-type segmentation is misleading. Approach SG without distance distribution is a fraction of the story. Every metric is paired with the contextual data required to interpret it correctly. The goal is not to show a number, it is to show what that number means given everything else that was happening in the hole. Numbers without context are not intelligence. They are noise with a decimal point.

Three Habits: Getting the Most Out of It

  1. Always start with Tiger 5, never with a segment tab. The Tiger 5 view is the prioritization engine. It decides which segment tab you open and which statistic you read first. Bypassing it is the analytical equivalent of skipping the diagnosis and going straight to treatment: you might get lucky, or you might spend three weeks fixing the wrong thing.
  2. Follow failures upstream before accepting the obvious explanation. When Golf Intelligence points to a segment tab, read context data before reading the headline metric. First-putt distance before make rate. Approach distance before scrambling rate. Tee shot lie before recovery success rate. The most emotionally vivid failure of the round is almost never the most important one.
  3. Use consistent patterns to trigger PlayerPath reviews. Golf Intelligence and PlayerPath are designed to operate together. When Tiger 5 surfaces the same failure category in three or more consecutive competitive rounds, that is the signal to escalate: open a full PlayerPath review, confirm the driver, and restructure practice around it until the data shows improvement.
